Who we are

Chromatics is an independent reading app, made and run by its maker from Ohio, United States. “We” and “us” in these terms means Chromatics. You can reach us at hello@chromatics.mobile.

The service

Chromatics prepares classic, public-domain books for reading on an iPhone: every speaker’s dialogue in its own color, a banner that keeps the scene in view, audiobooks that read along with the text, and a commonplace book for the lines you keep. Features change and grow. We may withdraw a feature or a title, and we will say so on the site when it matters.

Your account, and how to use it

You sign in with an email code or with Apple. Keep your sign-in to yourself; what happens under your account is your responsibility. One account per person, and you need to be old enough to hold an Apple ID where you live.

Use the app for reading. Don’t try to break it, get around the paywall, reach another reader’s data, or overload our servers. No automated access, scraping, or bulk downloading of the texts, the audio, our editions, or this site.

Content and ownership

The texts are public domain, from Project Gutenberg. The recordings are public domain, from LibriVox volunteers. Both are free to everyone, in Chromatics and outside it.

Our editions are our work: the prepared text, the speaker palettes, the scene banners, the audio alignment, the artwork, and this site. They are licensed to you for personal, non-commercial reading, not for copying or redistribution.

Your kept lines and notes are yours. We store them to serve them back to you and to export them where you ask, and you can take them out at any time.

Subscriptions and purchases

Chromatics Plus subscriptions and the Founding Reader purchase, the one-time lifetime tier, are sold by Apple through the App Store. Apple bills you and handles cancellations and refunds. Your use of the iOS app is governed by Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement; where these terms and that agreement differ, that agreement wins for the app.

A subscription renews until you cancel it in your Apple ID settings, at least a day before the renewal date. Deleting the app, or your account, does not cancel a subscription. Prices can change; Apple tells you before a renewal at a new price.

No warranty

Chromatics is provided as is. Public-domain texts carry their transcription errors, a speaker color occasionally lands on the wrong speaker, audio alignment can drift, and we cannot promise the service will always be available or free of mistakes. We disclaim implied warranties, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, to the extent the law allows.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Chromatics, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid for Chromatics in the twelve months before the claim. Some places do not allow these limits; where that is the case, they apply as far as the law permits.

Ending things

You can stop using Chromatics whenever you like, and delete your account from Settings → Account, or by emailing us. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and we will tell you why unless the law prevents it. The sections on content, warranty, liability, and governing law survive the end of your account.

Changes

When these terms change, this page changes and the date at the top moves. If a change matters, we will say so in the app or by email before it takes effect.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be settled by writing to us goes to the state or federal courts located in Ohio, and you agree to their jurisdiction.
